What Is an Arrhythmic Heart Condition?
Arrhythmia is a medical condition where the patient experiences an irregular or off-track heartbeat. It happens when the electrical impulses that control your heartbeats don’t work correctly, causing your heart to beat too fast (tachycardia), too slow (bradycardia), or erratically. Arrhythmias can vary in severity. Some may be harmless, causing minor or occasional fluttering or palpitations, while others can be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention. If you feel minimal or intense fluttering in your heart, we recommend scheduling an appointment with a cardiologist as soon as possible.
What Are the Types of Arrhythmia?
The types of arrhythmia include tachycardia, bradycardia, and premature contractions. Each type has specific sub-types of which your cardiologist can diagnose. Here’s how they work:
- Tachycardia: A resting heart rate that is faster than normal (over 100 beats per minute in adults).
- Bradycardia: A resting heart rate that is slower than normal (under 60 beats per minute in adults).
- Premature Contractions: Early heartbeats that originate in the atria (PACs) or ventricles (PVCs), causing sensations of missed or extra beats.
Heart Rhythm Abnormalities We Treat
We treat the following heart rhythm abnormalities:
- Atrial fibrillation
- Atrial Flutter
- Supraventricular Tachycardia
- Premature Ventricular Contractions
- Ventricular tachycardia
- Bradycardia
Atrial Fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation (Afib) is the most common type of arrhythmia and is associated with an irregular, often very rapid heart rate. Afib can lead to clots in the heart and therefore increases your risk for stroke. If you have Afib, we encourage you to consult with our experts at Cardiovascular Specialists of New England.
